Rainfall patterns in northcentral FL are almost back to normal-- meaning we have had many wet evenings, and although many ephemeral ponds are still low, the rivers are flowing again and amphibians are breeding.
We had about an hour of rain yesterday afternoon so I took a short drive in the Gainesville area. Treefrogs seen were squirrels, greens, barkers, and Pine Woods. A couple of southern chorus frogs were ratcheting and little grass frogs were abundant. Southern toads were trilling and a few oak toads were peeping from roadside ditches. Pig frogs called and immature bullfrogs and adult southern leopard frogs were seen on the road. The anuran highlight of the night was a single Florida gopher frog. Only 2 reptiles, a Florida water snake and a small Florida cottonmouth were seen on the road.
