Young ones fighting.

scotsdragon Jun 19, 2003 07:18 AM

Last year i had two beardies who got along reasonably well. One was more dominant & as they werew too young to sex, i assumed one was male & one was female.

Then one day the quieter of the two turned on the bigger & chewed his foot. I kept an eye on them, even having to separate mouth from foot at times. I tried bathing the foot in iodine & it seemed to be healing up & the fighting seemed to have stopped. By this time the toes were kind of mashed into one. Then the fighting started again & i had to take one back to the vet. As it happens i gave two of them back last November & a new stock has just arrived in. What a long wait! Anyway, i got two babies yesterday & i have my fingers crossed. First time posting on here so i'm sorry it's a bit long winded.

I have 3 young ones in a 30 gallon tank as we speak and I have not had any problems as of today. They all are in the same age range and size. There are 2 males and 1 female. I know that I will eventually have to seperate them, but I have the extra tanks already, just have to assemble them and get the stands built to put them on. After the dragons reach a certain age and both are males they will start fighting you will need to seperate them. If you have a female and male they will most likely not fight, unless they are mating and then the behavior is normal. However, the male will be the one doing the biting at the back of the females neck. If your new dragons start fighting you will need to seperate them. There is a place you can get reasonable tanks and that is Glasscages.com. They are acrylic tanks. You may want to check out their site. BTW welcome to the forum.

You can keep young dragons together in the same cage if they are pretty much the same size. However as they do get older, you have to watch very carefully for any signs of fighting or stress. More dominant dragons can hog all the food, leaving the less dominant with no food or very little which can lead to other problems, the least of which it won't grow as fast as the dominant one.

From my personal research and comments by more experienced dragon owners here it seems best to keep dragons separate once they are about 3 to 4 months old or if any signs of fighting are detected. ALso with younger dragons kept together there is a chance of accidental maiming (ie toes or tail tips being bit off by baby dragons missing crickets or thiking moving parts are food).

Another point though is if you do put a pair together or even three and one is a male and all grow up together, the male will mate with the female(s). If the females are under a year old (or even under two years old) breeding at a young age can be harmful to her health. The drain on her resources before she is fully grown herself could stunt her growth, risk egg binding etc. when bred too young. Also, you will have clutches of eggs to incubate and babies to feed (as much as 1000 crickets a day to feed them, maybe more). So it is always best to keep males and females separate once they get a certain age till you are ready to bred them.
