rehabbing a hit RES

4everherpn Jun 12, 2004 11:54 AM

I found a female RES yesterday on I-24. I thought she may be dead. However I found her to be very much alive. She had sustained some damage to her shell and her head. Her head is so disfigured. Her jaw was smashed in half and I her eyes are gone. I do not think it would be fair to the turtle to keep it alive, but that is what I have been doing.

You see it is egg laying time for RES and if she has eggs and I'm sure she does I do not want to euphamise her in such a way that it will kill the eggs too.

She is currently sitting in a rubbermaid container. I have cleaned her up the best I could with Hydrogen Peroxide and put betadine ointment on all open wounds. She is responsive whenever I get near her container.

What can I do?

I am travelling to Memphis this evening to work. I will bring her with me if I must. I will be down there for about a week I guess. Any suggestions?

I think you should try to contact a wildlife rehab place, look in the phonebook, call some vets, just find one. They will take care of her.
