Pumkin fruit okay for a Russian?

xjoex Jun 12, 2004 12:12 PM

My fiance is growing pumpkins to make pumpkin pie, and I was wondering if a little bit of the meat, not the pulp/seeds would okay as a treat for my Russian tortoise. Thanks guys.

According to my "Tortoise and Turtle Feeding Manual" from the Tortoise Trust, pumpkin flesh is OK as part of a varied diet. They list it as having "significant" amounts of oxalic acid, but nothing like spinach or rhubarb.

Perfectly fine in small amounts. Best to use in the fall as pumpkin has a enzyme that acts as a natural dewormer. I use it on our Russian's in the fall before they start their hibernation process.
