Late mating observed . . .

BlueKing Jun 12, 2004 01:01 PM

Two days ago I witnessed my two of my Eastern Kings (from Lake City Fl. locale) lock up for the first time this year. Kind of late, but I've seen this before. Just wondering if there are any of you guys/gals that's witnessed this before on your own animals. I guess this means eggs in late July/early August. I guess I might have some very late arrivals coming (October?)lol!
Thanks for reading,

Zee

Hey Zee,

My GA easterns are just now getting it on. I kept them in brumation mode until late April this year because I was buisy constructing cages for all of my holdbacks. I have just yesterday received my first clutch from them (13-all fertile) and I have 2 more girls confirmed gravid. normally I would have all of my GA eggs by now. Don't seperate them until you feel that firm lower swelling in your girls when they are in the blue. I have missed out on several good clutches by removing the boys too early. Good luck. Just my observations, not fact, my .02.

Thanks for the info, Will. The snakes in question were the ones I bought here on the classifieds a few months ago. I guess they must have been kept in a cool location (at the sellers house) maybe, or been brumated quite late. I remember finding a NC. locale female E. King last year in early June. I thought that she had laid her eggs already as she appeared rather slender considering that it was early June. Well, after hanging on to her for about a month and a half she dropped 14 eggs. Unfortunately only two of them were fertile. I had then inquired about the past weather for this part of NC, and found out that they had a very unusually lengthy cool spring for that year. I, just having moved here didn't realize that until I had that female lay her eggs so late. And being that only two were fertile, it leads me to believe that mating was not quite completed for that season for the Kings. A lesson learned (I guess).
Take care,

Zee
