Female blue bar ambilobe refusing food

Chameleo19 Jun 12, 2004 01:13 PM

It has been about 3 days since she last ate. I figured she was getting tired of crix so I ordered her silkworms, no go. Her temps in basking spot are between 90-97, backround temps drop as low as 74. She has an automatic misting system that goes off 3-4 times a day. Has a dripper. Is in a 24x24x36in cage. She is approx. 5-5.5 months old. Has a basking light and reptisun uvb bulb. She still drinks heartily, and she spends most of her time basking. I have never had a chameleon just refuse food one day. The only thing I can think of is the last day she ate she did her usual routine run over to get as many crix as she can as I am dumping them out of the bag onto the vines, except this time she shot at a cricket still in the bag and pulled the bag to her mouth where I had to then remove it. I didnt pull on her tongue at all seeing that she already detached her tongue from the bag and I then removed it from her mouth. Well I shouldnt say that was the last time she ate she still ate after the removing of the bag and her tongue functioned fine. I did have a fecal done on both the male and female a week after recieving them and both came back negative. I didnt take them to the vet yet for an exam b/c i figured it would be too much stress to take them to a vet a few weeks after recieving them. It is possible she is still eating with out me knowing but she doesnt have her appitite she had when I first got her. I noticed crix are missing from her cage the following day but its hard to keep track of crix when they can be hiding in the 3 plants in her cage.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well I guess I was just being paranoid like I tend to be about my animals. She used to be a chow hound in front of me, I guess now she is too shy to eat in front of me. Today I checked on the silkworms I put in her cage and 4 of them were missing. So I guess I just over reacted when she went off food for a few days.

As she ages her metabolism is slowing down. Offering a brand new food once doesn't mean she'll try it. If she is not very hungry she may not bother to try. Try feeding normally one day and offering just a light snack the next. She may get some appetite back and that is when you can offer new things. Try smaller active insects like moths or houseflies. But, the main thing is not overfeed her so she has little interest in eating from day to day.
