Fertilization of veiled eggs at early development

chunks_89 Jun 12, 2004 01:44 PM

I am mating my female veiled after the 12th of August, right after I get back from a trip. She laid an infertile clutch in late april.

Considering veileds, unmated, lay infertile eggs every 4-5 months, do you guys think I can mate her at an early egg development stage (say, 10-30% fully developped) and still get fertile eggs?

Thanks everyone

I think you would be fine mating a female at 10-30 percent development and getting fertile eggs, but females don't necessarily lay eggs on a set schedule.... Some will lay infertiles all the time, others never do. It depends alot on feeding and supplementation, and the only way you would really know is if you had a female that had laid clutch after clutch of infertiles, and started to develop a pattern. Even then, it would be hard to predict when an infertile clutch was coming. The best way to do it would be her weight, by keeping track of it regularly. But back to your question, you'll get fertile eggs unless she lays them relatively quickly after breeding. Plan on about 20 days between gravid colors and digging, of course, give or take a week or two. Good luck!

Sounds good, the reason why I am pretty sure about when she will lay infertiles is that she has already laid two clutches of them. One in December 2003 and one in late April this year. I'm just going to hope for the best and keep her food to a minimum. I'll keep her weight recorded regularly as well.

What do you think is a good amount of food for her? I am presently feeding 6 medium crickets (or equivalent) every 2 days with supplementation every 4 feedings. I gutload my crickets with sticky tongue farms' Vit-All (very good stuff, I would reccomend it to everyone, about a week after using it I noticed a very large difference in robustness and speed of growth in the crikets.)
