thin veiled

sketchymak Jun 12, 2004 04:04 PM

My veiled cham is about 4 years old now and has begun to look a little thin.

He eats 4-5 crickets and 3-4 mealworms every other day. Once a week he gets a silkworm, and he gets waxworms every so often.

Crickets and mealworms are fed apples, carrots, quaker harvest crunch cereal, wet cat food, and fish flakes.

Is he simply getting old, or should I be feeding him more?

does the harvest crunch have sugar in it? I don't know if that is a good idea long term (for your cham). I also think cat food and fish flakes isn't the best either. Check out adcham.com for a good gutload. If this is what they have always been fed there may be some long term problems that are showing as he gets older. just a thought - I could be totally wrong on the food thing

I used to feed my feeders flake fish food all the time.
Actually, Big Tattoo (a very knowledgeable, but now AWOL cham owner) also recommended it. I've also given them dry cat food kibble from time to time as well.
I don't think I'd give wet food though, as it would tend to go bad quickly.
But, I mean, if you've been doing it for four years, I can see why you would need to stop now.
I think you might be better off skipping the harvest crunch cereal, and going with some nice fresh fruits and veg.

As far as your cham looking thin, at the age of 4, that could just old age sneaking up on him. If he's eating up his 4 or 5 crix every other day, why not increase either his frequency or quantity of feedings?

Cat food and fish flakes are fine getting the insects to grow, but the protein is hard on kidneys. Give it to the crickets or other insects about once every 3 or 4 weeks, to boost growth and add some simple protein to the cham's diet.
