Sick Baby... please help!

KPGeckoGal Jun 12, 2004 04:04 PM

Hi Everyone!
I've been trolling the board for a while now, however this is my first post, and would appreciate anyone's advice.

We have a 4 inch old baby leo (not sure the exact age, although we purchased her about a month ago) who's been quite sick lately. I think she impacted on too large a cricket and stopped eating, and blood was coming from her vent.(we've been keeping her and her former tankmate on paper towels, so no chance for sand impaction). Went to the vet yesterday, and the doc tested for parasites (negative) gave her an enema... which produced, as the vet put it, a "significant amount of fecal matter for a gecko this size". She perked up a bit after that, but is still very, very weak. She has stopped licking her baby-food/vitamin mix off of her snout, and now I'm having to force feed her some mix the vet gave me.

Since I fed her this morning, she's been standing in the same place with her snout straight up in the air, and hasn't moved for several hours. Anyone know what this behavior means? The vet said to try to drop the food mix pretty far back in the throat so the gecko doesn't aspirate the mix and choke. I hope I got it down there correctly!

Anyway, I hope this little critter makes it! She has such a gentle disposition and will be a gorgeous tangerine color if she makes it to adulthood. Aside from moving her to the "hospital tank" and feeding the emergency mix 2x per day, is there anything else I can do. I check on her every know and then, but otherwise, am trying to leave her alone as not to stress her out.

Thanks for any help!

find some small wax worms. I have yet to see a gecko who can resist wax worms. I would put some in the feed dish & leave her alone. Check up on her 1 - 2 times and just let her rest.

Also see if you can't get a product called Jumpstart. Its an appetite stimulant and caloric replacement with vitamins and minerals added. I swear by the stuff for sick herps. And there's a place out there where you can get it for less than $10 total including shipping... trying to remember the name of it... oh yeah.. herpsupplies.com. Here's a link to the page that has Jumpstart on it. They have great service too..
