Question on IBD

kane65 Jun 12, 2004 04:31 PM

How common is IBD in Boids? It seems like there's an awful lot of posts on various forums of peope who think their boa or python has IBD.

It is unfair to say that IBD is common, but at the same time many cases do exist. This viral disease affects the lysosomes ability to denature miscoded proteins, which accumulate as inclusion bodies, often in the nerve tissue of reptiles. This is what causes neuralogic impairments and eventually death. It is not the most common disease in existance, it is good to be aware of its symptoms. This disease has been known to whipe out entire collections so the quarentine of suspected infected individuals is necessary! Hope this helps!
