Clumsy Dragons in tall viv?

Tyrannica Jun 13, 2004 12:21 AM

I just recently rescued two water dragons from a teacher. I have them in this vivarim:

They have never had proper heating, uvb lights, calcium suppliment before I took them. They now have the appropriate care. They have snout damage ( taking to vet monday/tuesday ) But the question I have is, do your dragons regularly climb to the top and fall tumble tot he bottom? The cage is about 3-4 feet high, and I worry when my big male climbs to the top, only to tumble to the bottom of the viv. Im really worried about him getting hurt, especially since his limbs and body is so frail from lack of proper nutrition.

Mine would sometimes jump down, but they always seemed to do it on purpose. Your guys probably have a calcium deficiency, and could easily break something if they fall. You may want to try to arrange the branches so they have a very gradual slope, and maybe pad the bottom of the viv? I used indoor/outdoor carpeting in my viv, you could use some rubber padding and carpet on top. Or, remove all the branches and keep them grounded until they get stronger.

I'm trying to figure out how they're getting to the top in the first place. Are they climbing the screen walls? I would also suggest adding some sterilized branches at a gradual slope for them to climb...

Yes, they climb to the top. Actually in these past 3 days they have been acting much less frail and alot stronger when they go climbing and leaping from places in the cage. I think they have learned to not jump to the bottom ( yay! ).
