Uroplatus temps - share your experiences

HoWheels Feb 07, 2003 12:56 PM

Since I had a post in the old forums that I thought was getting kind of interesting, I thought I would continue it here.

Essentially I asked for suggestions for a new night-bulb since I had observed my 40-watt bulb not being able to put out enough heat to keep my Uro's at the temperature I wanted.

I had been following Robert Gundy's guidelines to keep them between 68-72 during the day, and 64-68 at night (during the winter months).

Someone wrote back and mentioned that I shouldn't worry about it, as Uroplatus have been observed breeding in temperatures below 55 degrees!

I've been trying to find information about weather conditions of the region of Madagascar the Uroplatus is from, but haven't had much luck. Also, I suppose it could also be true that conditions in the wild do not always result in the best conditions for longevity, especially in captivity.

Please share your experiences and practices with temperatures for your Uroplatus!

Thanks!

-Matt

Well those are the average temps I use. I have had my Uroplatus at 58 on some nights though. They can take cooler temperature without a problem. I should probably change the caresheet to say temp ranges a little bit lower, I've had a few questions about that lately. I'm in Florida, so those are the temps I keep them in. 58F for Floridians might as well be snowing! But like I said, there's no detriment for temps in the upper 50's on some nights, but I would definitely not let them go below that.

That was me Matt. I already gave the reference to you, but in case anyone else wants to know, I got that temp data from Volume 2, issue 2 of "Gekko", the bi-annual Journal of the Global Gecko Association. The observance of U. henkeli breeding at sub 55 F temps was originally published in Volume 5 Issue 5 of Reptiles magazine.

By the way, I highly recommend that you all check out the GGA site for one of the best Uroplatus caresheets I've read online, and maybe even consider becoming a member. It is a wonderful group, with an active and informative mail-list frequented by some very well respected herpetologists and herpetoculturists form around the world. Sorry for the shameless plug, but I do not work for them, nor have they brainwashed me; I'm just a satisfied member.
