Questions on feeding

invalidKey Jun 13, 2004 01:06 PM

I got this snake secondhand and it has always been fed live (which I won't do). I'm trying to switch it to f/t. Last night I thawed under a heat lamp to 90 degrees and put the mouse by it's hide on the cool side. It definitely recognized the scent because it climbed on top of it's hide and sat there ready to strike. But it just watched it like it was waiting for it to move. When I tried to make the mouse move the snake just came over and checked out the tongs then moved back and just watched. I left the mouse in the cage overnight and found it right where I left it and the snake in the opposite hide. Should I just wait for it to eventually eat or is there something I can do? Should I try putting the mouse in the snakes face? Should I try more heat on the mouse? Is there a special dance the mouse can do? How many times can you refreeze a mouse before it's no good?

It seemed a little strange that it would just watch the mouse and do nothing other than put it's neck in an S. I'm prepared to wait, I would like to avoid it tho. Any tips would be appreciated.

I don't refreeze anything that has sat out overnight.
I wean anything I get that is taking only live to prekilled twitching, then prekilled 'stone cold' dead and then to f/t. I would first 'teach' it to take live from tongs. Then go to twitching prekilled.....then on and on. If it refuses, go back a step. Some snakes will just go and take f/t...so it was good to try that first. But some have to be taught to. You could also try prekilled in the same was as you did the f/t. Some snakes take longer to go to the smell of f/t. Then too there are snakes that won't take anything but f/t.

Haven't we warned you about tampering with the structure of a chaotic system?

Put a live in a bag, wrap it in a towel and smack it on a hard floor. Not so hard, the skull opens but hard enough that all you have is a twitching rat. I inherited an adult that has only been fed live and I got it to this point pretty easily.

I wouldn't refreeze the rat.

Sorry, I think I over reacted. Eating a f/t as I type. Was thawed in a baggie in warm water to about 95. Didn't even try to constrict it, just hit it and started swallowing. Once again thanks for the tips. I'll file them away for the future.
