Ig Questions

SpookyScales Jun 13, 2004 01:46 PM

Dear kingsnake Iguana Forum Members,
I'm considering getting an iguana sometime soon. I've ordered the "Green Iguana-Ultimate Owner's Manual" book, and I'm in the process of researching them. However, I still have LOTS of questions! Does anyone use the "IgDen Iguana Diet", and if so, have you had and heard great results from the use of it? Do you let your iguana free-roam, and do you reccomend it? If you DON'T let your iguana free-roam, then what's your cage size demensions (adult igs only)? If you are the first home for your iguana (besides petstore/breeder/etc.), and you think you've done a good job raising it, have you ever been tail whipped or bitten? And if so, where there obvious signs that this was going to happen, and what do you think the reason was for? Also, before I drive you outta here with questions, please give me some links to some REALLY good companion iguana websites! Thanks so much!!

Sincerely,
SpookyScales
PS- Feel free to email me at: AlrightyThen100@aol.com ,but if you do, please put something iguana related as the subject! -Thanks!

Check this out.

This link has usefull information about IGs.

One more thing. Every ig owner has been tail whipped or bitten once in a while. It will be natural for you. Some IGs are more aggressive than others. Fulton (my little iguana, male, almost 2 years old) has his days. Sometimes he lets me take him the easy way, sometimes not (whipping his tail and walking away from my hand). You can't let him intimidate you. The more time you spend with your iguana, the sooner he will become socialized. I would also recommend the "Iguanas for Dummies" book (I have both books).

Good luck.

Thomas.

hey,
i use the iguana den diet.... i LOVE it. wen i first got tiny to a vet like 3 wks after i got him, he was 81 grams. a month later he was 102, then 3 wks after that he was 116. so since he went on the diet he hasnt stopped skyrocketing. he has also grown like 2 inches or so snout to vent length.

First off welcome to teh forum and its good to see that you are reasearching before you buy.

As far as my igg diet. i dont follow the iguana den. i give my igg mixed greens everyday ie. dandylion, colard, mustard, some kale, endive, and some fruits and vegetables.

My iguana ius a free roamer but he is also a pretty big iguana. he is around 4 feet long and would be bigger but when i got him he was missing a part of his tail so i would say he should be around 4.5 to 5 feet long. and his cage is 8 feet long 4 feet wide and 6 feet tall. and that is the smallest i would recomend for a full grown adult cage.

As far as tail wipping i have had smaller iggs and they all tail wip and will try and bite when they dont know you. it comes with owning an iguana also remeber just because you hold your iguana everyday doesnt garrantee he will become tame. with the small ones i have watched for friends and my little one i used to have you can always tell. they will hiss and my little one used to arch up his back and kinda curve his body like he was going to wack me with his tail..he was lining me up...lol and for a reason they just dont want to be bothered.. iguanas are solitary animals and some just dont like human company

also get the book iguanas for dummies.. it is THE BEST book you can get.

Also here is a pic of my little guy before he passed and my big iguana just to show you a size comparison. The little guy is about 15-18 inches long and the bigg guy is around the 4 foot mark.. and ill also post a pic of my bigg iguanas full body.. or part of it. in a poost below

also with my bigg guy. i have not had him since he was a baby i adopted him at this size. and he is a big scaley dog.. he is very friendly but he also has problems he was abused and now he suffers because of it. he cannot act like a normal iguana. he has no climbing ability and has numerous other problems. he has had MBD and probably other problems i dont know about.

Just make sure you take care of your iguana right and let himlive a long healthy life and not have to live like my guy and not be able to do the things that igg like the most.
