Look at the difference 2 months can make.

This is Sweetpea, my german pastel from dragons den. She just turned 3 months old. The hatchling on her back will be a month old at the end of this week. It is 5" and 8 grams while the beast is 12" and clocked in at 108 grams today. I've had her for 5 weeks now and she has grown 5 1/2" and gained 98 grams in that span. That's over 1" about 20 g per week. What a hog!

I didn't intend to sound rude. It was a justified question. A lot of attention was given to the situation though.

It is really neat to see how fast they grow, and It can help people understand why such attention to detail is a MUST from the start. Look how much growth they can lose in such a short time (and how many times have you heard, "I don't have a UVB light but we are going to get one" People don't realize how much every week counts.

BUT, When you have a small animal and a large one like that together it does not matter how many people are around to watch it, it's a big risk. The small dragon could bolt and the large one could have it before anything could be done about it.

Ask Joel R how quickly it happens, I think he lost a baby last year this way. Where is Joel anyway? I have been off the forums for awhile, does he still breed? Does he ever stop by?

I am glad everything went ok for you, but I do agree with littleherper's concern. It would happen in a flash and be very sad. I am not saying that the risk wasn't justified, that pic is definatly useful in showing growth rate, but maybe a "don't try this at home kids, these dragons are professionals" should be added to the bottom.

She posted the story on her website. It all happened so fast there was no way she could do anything.

I know if she were here right now she would post this link, hopefully she won't mind me sharing it....

Geeze, people, give him a break. He snapped a quick pic and then separated them. It's not like he was dangling the baby inside the others' mouth for goodness sake.

Nobody is being mean or accusing him of being a bad beardie owner, just giving a fair warning of the risks. Nothing wrong with being overly cautious. As you can see, Gunilla wasn't dangling the baby in the larger beardie's mouth either, but tragedy still happened.

Planes can crash but people fly anyway. Chances are slim. If it wasnt hungry it wouldnt have to eat. Put you baby bearded on top of your hungry adult while riding in a plane. Then lets see what happens. I bet nothing..HA

No reason to say "HA!" That's a very "TAKE THAT!" kind of attitude and it's not necessary in this conversation.

Nobody's trying to prove anything here. There are risks in everything we do, and some people just chose not to take those risks. I've seen tragedy and I wanted to share that with someone in the hopes to help them out, what they do with that info is their own business.

This comversation has remained very civil until now, and rujonesin has done a fine job of addressing everyones concerns on his own.

The "HA" was not ment like that as I thought could easielly be told. It is ment after a funny statment. Like you would use LOL. Things do get bersonal on here becuse people personally attack us breeders for what we do. I have said some very harsh things to people who need it. I will continue to do so. I have nothing against you, You were just stating you opinion like us all. If some people dont like what we write, They have the choice to click to the next site. Its america. Thou , the goverment is trying to take that away from us.
Thanx

Ok, I took it wrong. As you know it can be hard to get tone and intention across over the internet, and things can be misinterpreted. Ah well, it's the nature of the beast.

I'll take my leave of this conversation now, I've made my point and it looks like you have your hands full elsewhere.

When I do shows, I keep 400gram adults with month old babies for 10 hours at a time. Unless they are starved and very aclimated, there is nothing to worry about..usually. HA!

rujonesin Jun 13, 2004 07:08 PM

If you look in the manual written by Robert Mailloux (Sandfire Dragon Ranch) I actually got the idea from there. I wonder how many people wrote him in concern of the photos he placed in this book. The baby there is right on momma head. I can assure you all the baby was never in any danger. Of course that what the crocodile hunter said when he walked his 2 month old baby towards the croc. Now I will use the same disclaimer they used in the book.

Caution: Adults will readily eat juveniles if housed together. The baby in this photo was placed momentarily for size reference only.
