What is the diff between panthers?

Melisondra Jun 13, 2004 05:07 PM

Ive seen Ambilobe panthers and Nosy-be panthers, but i dont understand the difference?
Ive been looking at them alot lately, thinking about getting one whenever my veileds pass on (hopefully not for a looong time though )
What is there temperment like? Better/worse than veileds?

Sorry for all the questions but if anyone with panther experience could give some stories or info I would appreciate it!
Thanks!
Erin

Click on the link for Bluebeast reptile above when you first enter the Chameleon Message board - when you get to their site go to "locales" at the bottom of the page. There is a lot of info about what you are asking. All panthers, as I understand, come from different parts of Madagscar -hence their different 'locales'. I just got two baby ambanja panthers by the way, and I love them.

The name implies to the region/town/city of Madagascar they come from. A panther chameleon is a panther chameleon, the name like Nosy Be is used as a description of the color morph, and tells you where it came from. So a Sambava is a color morph in or near the locale of Sambava on the Island. Same goes for Diego Suarez, Ambanja, Nosy Be, Maroantserta, etc.

Im pretty sure this has been covered thoroughly before under "cross-breeding" posts and such, but then can you breed the different panthers together? Will different colors emerge blended together? Or will you still get seperate color morph babies of both types? or will they even breed?
(looking up lots of info as I type this, but just asking others their opinions)

Thanks for the info so far!
Erin

Oh you can breed them all together. Most people don't though as they try to maintain the regional morphs. Though I'm sure there is lot's of cross breeding in the wild populations. A male panther doesn't care what it is, as long as he can catch that female wandered by.
