Advice on cage setup

JWags Jun 13, 2004 06:01 PM

I dont have a picture but would like some advice on cage set up. I have calcium sand as a substrate and thought it is not recommended, I have had no problems and clean up is easy. I have a smaller sized cave about 8"x6"x5". I have a haba hut that i misted with water to semi-imitate a humid hide. I have an old reptile waterfall that has dried up and now I use as a tight, small cave inside and a basking spot outside. I have assorted small rocks and a decently large/shallow water dish. I have a heat bulb I turn on during the day, it is a blueish colored bulb. I have a purple-ish nighttime bulb I turn on at night. Anyone have any advice on a creating a natural looking humid hide? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks

I dont know about the hide but instead of using calcium sand you should get vita sand because it is much more fine than calci sand

I actually prefer the larger size calci sand. I tried the finer grade stuff, but I found really dried out their toes leading to a lot of shed problems. If it's an adult, I don't worry too much about impactions, though there is potential problem, I've never had one yet in 3 years.

Adults I wouldn't worry about too much either on calcium sand, but anything less I would NOT put on any kind of sand... I've lost one a while back and have since moved to paper towel and compressed felt-like covering.

Have you had good results with that felt stuff? It's machine washable, right? I'd be concerned they would swallow some fibers while eating. I generally prefer the calcisand b/c I like a more naturalistic look.

I have seen some clever humidity hides made from margarine tubs with fake leaves hot-glued on. Looks alot better than just the plain old plastic tub.
