Please Help!! Dying Beardie!

turtlequest Jun 13, 2004 07:39 PM

Help! One of my bearded dragons is dying. I have 2 bearded dragons about 2.5 months old each, one of them is fat and healthy. The other one has not eaten in 3 days. Today i picked him up and he ran from me when i picked him up he started convulsing and all of a sudden his eyes were cloudy, all four of his legs were straight and stiff, pointing down...his mouth was open and his
head was limp as if he was dead. His stomach was caved in like he imploded. All of a sudden he snapped out of it, and then went back to his normal self, but very very weak. Now he is turning a dark
grey color, almost blueish and when i picked him up i had a repeat of this episode. He is clearly dying, and i have no idea why.
My other dragon is healthy, their living environment is exactly how its supposed to be. My other dragon eats like a king, while this one only ate about 4 crix a day since i had him. The healthy one is calm and docile, but the sick one always go nuts and runs into the walls constantly.

Please help...what could have caused this. I recently switch from crix to silkworms, but that was only yesterday.

thanks.

it could jeopardize his life.

What you describe is something that is common in many species of lizards that are so stressed out they basically freak and play dead. They can appear to have seizures, stiffen out so much even their beard and belly skin/scales are stiff and then they appear to be dead. Stop picking him up and give him some time to learn to trust you. If he is in with another dragon and you can separate them, do it for the time being.

Keep your contact with him to a minimum and any ourside stimulas. They can be so traumatized they do die.

PLEASE, if you do think he is sick, get him to a vet to have him checked out by a professional.

Ok, i will leave her alone for the time being. But what could cause this "stress". Could the other dragon be causing it? Or me picking her up?

Actually yesterday a silk worm crawled on him and it freaked him out, could that be it?

I read on Beardie-dragons.com that you use Vision Cages. I wanted to know what you like about it. I also wanted to know how you set yours up. I am always looking for new ways to better my setup, and I know you have been breeding and caring for beardies for a very long time.

I know I spoke with you already, turtlequest but Id like to post for the other people. It is one of 3 things. It could be D3 overdose, Calcium deficiency, or calcium switch. From what we talked about, it looks to be the D3 overdose. For those that don’t know, some people use vitamin lights with UVA and UVB and also supplement with D3. Sometimes this causes seizures.. I use nothing but non-UVA/UVB spots and Rep-cal Phosphorous free powder. This is a vet-checked process and works great. You were also using a powder with D3 and Phosphorous. The insects you feed it have all the phosphorus it needs. Its also never good to change powders cold turkey. Like using Rep-cal (the bomb) and switch to Miner-all. This can be a shock to their system. We know it cant be a deficiency cus your using supplement. Let us know how it goes. I will post results on my site. I am in the midst of writing an article on this subject.
