Unusual Gopher????

renreps Jun 13, 2004 08:50 PM

Hey all,
Some friends of mine just brought over this animal for me to look at. I'm no Pituophis expert, so I thought I'd post it here to get some opinions. It was wild caught....I'll await your answers...
Thanks,
Rick

Looks like it is white-sided...Where was it caught? I would love to hear the story behind it...

And the sign says "No long hair freaky people need not apply." So I put my hair under my hat and I went in to ask him why. He said you look like a fine outstanding young man I think you'll do. So I took off my hat I said "Imagine that Huh Me working for you."-Tesla

posting the picture. If you happen to have more pictures please post them, and some details on the area where you caught that snake would be great too. Amazing looking snake, congrats on that catch.

Have a good one,

Gregg F.

This animal was wild caught in the San Diego area. I'm posting another pic of it. It is definately White-sided. There was another one caught in the same area, but it escaped. I don't have any San Diego Gophers to compare it with and don't have a book that goes into detail on the scale count differences between them and other Gophers. I don't own the snake(unfortunately), but I'm working on that!!

It's also Anery! Not to mention a very clean white-sided with great patter and awesome silver eyes. In my openion the anery gene, or lack of red/yellow, makes him even more special. It's very hard to compare him to a normal San Diego Gopher because as with all white-sided snakes the pattern is very different, but if he was caught in that area then I would say it's a San Diego Gopher. Keep working on getting him, he's one of a kind.

There is definitely more than "one" thing going on with that snake, and anery came to mind. Good call, nz.

Hi Jason,
mabe it's the pic! The size of the head in relation to the neck makes me think it could be a Pacific! Are they found in the same range as the San Diegos? What do you think it is?

Jason Nelson Jun 18, 2004 06:57 PM

I think Pacific range just north of L.A . I guess it really depends where they found the thing .Annectans and Pacific some times can be hard tell about a part but I agree pacific tend to be bigger and more robust . I had a anery annectan that was huge a 5 footer
