What type of Calking would this be called?

jlassiter Jun 13, 2004 09:24 PM

I bred the parents to this calking for three years. Both are banded calkings and the male is albino. For three years they produced "normal" looking banded calkings, some with low band counts but rather normal. The very last calking to hatch for me last year was this oddball looking one.
Would you call him an Aztec?
Half stripe? Or what. I know he is aberrant, but I see people selling calkings as aztec and I really have no idea what the criteria is to make it aztec. Anyway, I kept him for future breeding and he is het albino. Thanks for looking.

That's considered an aberrant cal king, much like some of the ones I produce. Nice one!

Well,
Aberrant was a given.
Thanks anyway,

...for some reason and I could only see the first paragraph and about 3/4 of the pic when I first looked at it.

Yeah, I've seen these so called 'aztec' kings too, and many of my little aberrant cal kings have looked very very close to what people are deeming 'aztecs'. From what I can tell they all have those fairly even 'aztecky' looking markings down their sides, with or without the reverse stripe down the back. Some, like yours and like one of my 02 hatchlings I hung on to have the partial stripe.

Does anyone know who coined the name and as JL said what makes an 'aztec' an 'aztec'?

I haven't a clue were the term comes from nor do I know what the criteria is. I am holding on to him because of the "neat" pattern and he is het for albino. I kept a low band count female het sibling to breed him to, but that will be in '06 unless they grow like weeds this summer.

I produce a few of these every year. It is not a recessive gene that is predictable, rather an aberrant pattern. Where the name "aztec" came from???....not sure. I've been calling them Aztecs since 2002........

Very nice Kerby. It is also reverse striped. I knew you would take part in this. I have seen some breeders selling such animals as mine as Aztec, but I did not believe them to be Aztec as compared to some I have seen on your site and others.
Thanks for the pic,

...would he also be considered an aztec along with JL's?

Sorry for the crappiness of the bottom pic, snapped it quick on almost dead batteries. He actually looks much better than that, but you get an idea from his hatchling pic on top.

Roo,
VERY NICE !!!!!
Yours seems to have much more "twin spotting" than mine. Mine has more of a stripe and the "twin spotting" is towards the nuchal.
Do you produce more like this one usually? I have been breeding Calkings for 4 years and this is the first to hatch out like this. I kept it for future breeding to its sibling, since they are both het for albino. I hope to produce an albino one like this next year.

Thankyou, he's one of my favourites and has a really nice temperament too.

I also kept one of his brothers from the same clutch, but he's not marked anything like that one is at all...in fact he's almost the opposite! He looks more like the mother who is banded, but his bands really fade out on his sides making the tops of them along his back look almost like spots instead of bands. There were a couple of other aberrants in that '02 clutch but the rest were banded like mom. The father is a beautiful banana king.
Last year they produced a couple of aberrants (nothing really special), some bandeds, and much to my delight and surprise 2 awesome almost complete reverse striped babies, 1 male 1 female. Unfortunately the female croaked for unknown reasons at about 3mos of age (figures huh?) but I kept the male and already have a future mate for him lined up.

I currently have 9 eggs in the incubator from the same pair laid for me last week. They all look great, so hopefully we'll have some more beautiful aberrant, striped, banded and maybe even some aztec-looking babies, we'll have to see!

She is a nice chocolate with a yellow stripe from the Carlsbad, CA locale. It will be interesting to see how the babies come out. She should be dropping her eggs soon.
