Hot Rocks?

ETChipotle Jun 13, 2004 09:41 PM

We were given a 5 year old leopard gecko in a 10 gallon. We also got a hot rock with it. I've mostly heard that hot rocks are always dangerous for lizards. Then again, the lady that gave us this lizard has had it as such for years.

I've also heard that the really fine sand that looks so nice is actually sharp edged, and will lacerate the intestines when ingested.

I just didn't like it because it sticks to me whenever I pick up a superworm. I've seen the gecko trying to shake it off her feet too, so she must feel the same way about it.

Anyway, I'm rambling. She's cute, really mellow... whatever happened to getting a new lizard and they wear themselves out wiping thier faces against the glass and trying to get out, and snapping at you if you try to offer any assistance or consolation....

There are a lot of risks involved in using hot rocks and/or sand. Too many, if you ask me. Why take a risk?

I would agree...to a point. Heat rocks are nice because they do allow a hot spot for digesting. But if you're going to do this, USE A THERMOSTAT WITH A PROBE, and but the probe directly on the rock. No more than 100 degrees (use a thermometer to help set the thermostat).
