has anyonehere here ever housed more than a few babies together?

beardiedragon Jun 13, 2004 10:10 PM

I am considering housing an entire clutch in one outdoor enclosure 3' x 5' or possably 2 enclosures. They will either be moved to feeding tubs during meals or be housed in groups of 5 and then moved outside for sunlight several hours a day.

Please dont tell me only 5 to a pen unless you have personal experience with this. I know what the rules are. I want to know if these rules apply to large enclosures. I am looking for personal experiences.

Thanks

Bennett,
You should talk to Rob And Vickie Dachiu. They keep 10 to a bin, I believe, so they should have some insight on the situation. I have kept more than 5 to a bin before but not often so I will not comment.

I have not housed a clutch together all the time, I keep them in tubs of 5 and 6 dragons. But I take them out daily (weather permitting) for 2-3 hours and put them in an outdoor enslosure with similar dimensions (about 4X3). They do great while they are out there, no problems at all. There is plenty of space for them, and they are feeling fat and lazy because I take them out after lunch. This is a clutch of 26 dragons. No problems at all with this. I have five bricks lined up for basking and everyone has a space. They do not get fed or watered outside, just sun.

Speaking of them.. I learned most of my breeding techniques from them. They sure do know their S#%@. I've even learned some breeding secrets from rob. Can you keep a secret...? I can!.

Im a pro breeder and I keep 15 to 20 babies in a 15gal tote at one time. I've never had a problem with tail nipping or anything like that. People that do, just dont feed the dragons often enough. I seperate them as they get bigger but keep them in there up to 2 months old. 15 gal is not that big so you should have zero problem,

We house a clutch of up to about 20 hatchlings in one bin. The bin is about 2ft by 17 inches. At about 3-4 weeks old, when they shed we start to serperate them by size usually into two bins. At 6 inches we house about 6-12 in a bin.Depending on clutch size. At 8 inches we usually house about 6-8 max in the same bins. If you have larger bins and a wide surface area for basking like outside you could up that number.
As far as nips you shouldn't be getting many/if any. We get about 1 nip in 10-20 clutches. And they are usually small nips at that.Nips are usually caused by improper feeding routine and/or too high of basking temps. You can have 2 people feeding 3 times a day about the same time everyday.Setups identical. One gets nips and the other doesn't. Why?

In regards to the post below,
As far as keeping babies with adults. I wouldn't, even in a box while cool. Taking a pic is another thing if you are careful.JMO
Please leave our name out of the arguements.

Rite from the horses mouth! Im glad rob an vicky were here to post this. I only wish they could have seen what JBEARDIE had to say about "People like us". Ill give you the jist of it the next time we talk. As for JBEARDIE, Please foward your remarks to all the large breeders. Man, I never get this mad about anything. Thanx to the Dachiu's for being such inovaters in the market and just for being nice people.

There are many different ways to do things and our way is not the only or best way for everyone. As long as the desired results are achieved (no nips) then we would suggest doing whatever works best for you.
Please remember that we are home all of the time with our dragons and consistantly feed/scoop them. For someone who must be away at work for hours at a time, perhaps a small number (say 5) of dragons will be much easier to care for.

We saw all of the posts earlier today and that is what prompted our response. Please, once again, dont rely on 1 persons experience, but rely on your own observations and do what works best for you.

Thanks,
Rob & Vickie

Jbeardie was responding to you saying you put babies in with large adults for many hours at a time, not that you kept many babies together. Wasn't the whole thread about putting small babies w/ larger beardies?

No, Jbeardie said I was a sick person for keeping more than 10 hatchlings in an enclosure at a time. and anyone who did so was sick and dirty and in it for one thing. This is the way I do it.(clean) I said nothing mean or hatefull to start out. They did that rite away. I have nothing but healthy good clean fat animals. I am the type of person to support my methods, some people are scared to do so. If someone dosnt like it..Who cares, I dont need or want them to buy anything from me. I stick up for myself and others. I expected others to do the same. Im not the type of person that wants everyone to like me. I could care less what Jbeardie thinks. I at least have to defend myself to others even If they dont matter to me. I feel like Im in friggin high school with this crap. If someone posts somthing you dont agree with, Dont put them down or insult them, just post what you think is the correct way and live life. At shows, I have 3 or 4 adults next to 30 or 40 babies. Ive never had a problem. Am I lucky? No, im responsible. I watch them. I let people know they cant house them together. I dont sell to 6 year olds like Im sure some people do. People are smart. Dont treat them like morons. I will take cheap shots at Jbeardie from now on. You may say that its unproffesional or I should be the better man. Let someone write what jbeardie wrote about me and see if you dont get Pee-d off!. O well, Eat, drink, and be merry for tommorow we'll die.

I did see that you were not the one who started with the flamewar. I know if someone said that stuff to me and questioned my techniques I'd be mad.

Still, I know it's hard and I know you don't want to, but I urge you to take the high road on this one. Lowering yourself to that level doesn't make anyone look good, and it will only result in a lot of deleted posts. If you remain calm and civil you will always come out on top of those who resort to insults and name calling.

Take care.
