dark alterna female in the rain 277 saturday

troy h Jun 14, 2004 12:14 AM

at 9:26, right after stopping to chat with "tank", I got a nice dark gray, black-headed, alterna morph female. 33", ovulating. She has 15 primaries, no noticeable orange (there are a few orange flecks in the last four or five bands near the vent, but you have to look very closely to see them), and only 3 alternates in between the first four primaries. She was coming down the east side of the road huge cut north of the picnic area, about 15 feet off the ground. Except for what I assume was a checkered garter in the driving rain just west of Rocksprings, she was the only snake I saw all night . . . although I called it quits and headed for home (Camp Wood) at 10. It was raining lightly but steadily when I caught her, although the cut face was still fairly dry.

I was up 277 with jason penney and got rained out. we saw an emoryi and a checkered garter on 277 and after about 10:30 we headed out to comstock and langtry. it had rained before we got there, but was nice and clear from about 12:00 on. We saw nothing on 90 but a ringtail and some skunks. it was a fun night, but no luck. Congrats on your alterna, not that you haven't found enough, lol.

On the opposite cut. I tried to climb the cut to get it while he held a pole up to guide the snake. He got excited and unleashed a landslide of boulders that knocked me off the cut. How I didn't break my legs I'll never know, LOL. He got the snake though. (Remember that, Dave?) I love that color morph!
