For some strange reason, despite beardies being desert animals, have a proneness to getting sand in eye turning into conjunctivitis--then eye infection. The eye with this complication will become puffy, swollen, sometimes runny.
Go to the vet immediately if this condition should occur.

This is #1 main reason why I strictly use newspaper and nothing else for substrate. Been doing it for years. Newspaper is very simple to change, and I regularly clean the enclosure (wiping with paper towel and water) to remove dust particles.

I am STRONGLY against the use of sand-you really do risk eye infection, and some even have become impacted.
