Basking Platform

ladybug104c Jun 14, 2004 09:20 AM

I really want a better basking spot for my Binx but really can't think of or find anything. Can some of you post pictures of yours and please explain them and where you got them/how you made them? Thank you!
I also posted this on the Painted forum because my Binx is a painted turtle, but this forum seems to see more action than over there.

I have a "turtle dock" that I got online. It floats so it adjusts to the height of the water but is also secured to the side with suction cups and a post through the actual dock. It has worked out great for my turtles.

Thanks guys! This looks awsome, and the med looks like the perfect size. The only thing I am worried about is the suction cups. How long do they last and can you get replacements? The basking spot I have for my turtle right now has suction cups and over the years they lose their stick. His shelf falls off the wall all the time and I have to fix it almost twice a week so he has a place to bask. That is why I am looking for a new one. I like this basking platform because it's more realistic than the one I have.
The one I have is plastic and is recessed on top so you can put rocks, moss, or something inside there for the turtle to sit on. Although it's empty now because he knocks off all the rocks anyway. It has two suction cups and a leg that ataches with a small piece of plastic that keeps falling out so the leg falls off and the shelf slides down. As you can see this is a pain in the butt and I need something new. I think this thing was just meant for decoration in a fish tank but I got it when I was in college and didn't know what else to get. It was better than what he had (a tank with gravel pushed to one side and a small bit of water in a 10 gal tank. As he grew I put him in a 20 long and now he's in a 90 gal. I am glad my friend gave him to me because who knows where he would be now.
Anyway thanks again for the help guys!

Not to worry. These suction cups hold up great.

Check the prices on Ebay and check thatpetplace.com. They ship fast and have good service and pretty decent prices.

That turtle is lucky to have you-- he must be in Heaven in that huge tank.

Well thanks, but technically he doesn't have that whole huge tank. lol. Since my platform stinks he only has half the tank filled. He will get more when I get the new platform. I still can't fill it all the way though because he likes to climb and would get out if I had the water too high. So he will have most of the tank when he gets his new basking spot, but not all of it still. Maybe someday I can get a custome made top like Iturnrocks, so he can have the entire tank. Thanks for the info on where to buy.
No one has answered me in the painted turtle forum it's lonely over there.

You said if you had the water to high he can get out? Why don't you get a screen top for your tank? That's what I have on mine and then the lights and stuff on top of it. I just cut a couple holes in the screen in various places to feed through and to put tubing and what not through. Just an idea...then you can fill the tank all the way up

Yes he had a screen on his 20 long tank but that's when he had a free standing light that could be moved to shine down on him. Now in the 90 gal (do they even make screens that big?) he has a clip on light and if I put the water as high as it can go the light might get too hot for him. It also makes the wire on the screen hot and he always used to push his head against the screen. I would not want him to burn himself. The hood of the tank is broken so all I have is the light part and I need to clean it up and get a new bulb for it. As soon as I do that I am going to lay it across the top of the tank so he has light all over the tank in the day time and still has his clip on basking light. I am going to fill the tank as high as I can with enough room for his basking spot, as soon as we get the platform. His tank is so blah too. I also want to get him some driftwood from "that pet place" and some fake plants for him to hide in. All he has right now is his old basking spot and some big rocks (about the size of a dollar coin). He doesn't really eat too much fish anymore so I was thinking I could get about a dozen rosies to brighten up the place. If he eats them, oh well lol that's what they are for. If not then they will be a colorful addition. Once I am finished with his tank I will post a pic. If everyone doesn't mind seeing a pic of a Painted! lol
