Chamelen feeding Question

Gpoop Jun 14, 2004 10:59 AM

Hi, I've always wanted a Veiled chameleon and I was wondering something.
Can a chameleon live off of Can O' Crickets and Can O'Worms 3 to 5 times a week and live prey 2 times a week? I don't plan on getting one just wondering. I hate feeding live prey, its a pain in the bum. Thats the only reason why I'm not getting one.

wats so bad about live crickets and mealworms they are cheaper than the can o products and i would think more healthy for the animal if you use a supplment but i wouldnt reccomend using the can o products for a chameleon because i dont think it would eat them

There not bad at all its lack of transportation. I only get to drive on wednesdays and Sundays so if I run out of live prey I'm screwed. My parents are both busy during the week and don't want to be bother getting food for it.

I'm not sure what the can o' products are...
I'm assuming they are dehydrated insects.

You're going to have a rough time getting a chameleons attention with a non-moving insect. Make sure these can o' products are nutritionally sound and have a good back-up plan if they don't work out. Also, chams get a portion of the water they need from their prey, so keep this in mind as well.

That's all I can suggest.

I can only offer theory since I have never given the can o' products a shot.

I actually got a free can 0 crickets for purchasing some supplies. I know chameleons wont go for dead insects, but i decided to try anyway. You guessed it, not a single cham was interested. However, there is a feeding bowl that vibrates, so that the food placed there appears to be alive. i am not sure if that would work, and how yo would place that in a chameleon enclosure, but its a suggestion.

You can have insects delivered to your door. Searh the web for "crickets" and you will see what I mean.

When I first started on chameleons I had that same idea buy can o' crickets and put it in the jitterbug food dish.....DOESN'T WORK, don't waste your money just buy live food in bulk and it'll last you a while.
