Adding a Second?

skwas12 Jun 19, 2003 11:29 AM

I have a female leopard geckos who is about three and a half years old. I just got her a bigger tank and I was wondering if I could add another lizard. I had her in with my bearded dragon but the dragon didn't like her. What type of cool looking gecko or other lizard can I add or is it best to stick with another leopard gecko? If the answer is another leopard gecko should it be male/female and adult/baby. Thanks to anyone who can help out.
Steve

Well im glad to hear you have seperated your leo from your beardie..(wont go into that)

the only good lizard to keep with a leopard gecko is another leopard gecko. although geckos do very well alone if not better.

if you want to add another leo i would go for a female.

quarantine your new leo for at least 21 days keep it in a seperate room if possible to avoid your leo catching anything that it may have.

when you put them together make sure your tank is large enough 15 gallons long minimum. And ensure that both leos are getting along together and are both feeding well.

hope this helps

I agree, you should keep it to one species... Another leo will be fine as long as you have the room. Personally, I would reccomend a 20gal L for 2 adult leos.

so 7 in a 50 breeder...yes, no? 4 babies (maybe 5 inches) and 3 sub-adults. Only 1 male they get along fine, everyone is eating well, plenty of hides (one for each) and no fights for the bathroom in the morning
they are more social to me now that they are all together too.

oh my, brace yourself and grab your butt cause your probally going to catch some fire because of this question. LOL. I am not going to give you a hard time about it though. Herps of differnt species with the exception of a very few amphibians should never be housed together. Most have to much of differnt needs. There are too many chances of stress, disease, fighting, being ate etc...
The best would be another leo. Make sure the sizes of them are similar. I have seen large leos eat smaller ones! Males won't go together they will fight till death. If you don't want breeding and eggs get a female. If your female is not at least 10 months old and 45 to 50 grams don't add a male that will breed her. Make sure your tank is at least a 15 gallon long 20 gallon is best by the time you add hides and necessities. Hope all goes well if you have any other questions be sure to ask
