A Bizarre Find - Mystery Snake

MAP Jun 14, 2004 12:13 PM

My daughters have 4 pet Corn Snakes - Bloodred, Oketee, Creamsicle, and Snow (and 1 Brazilian Rainbow Boa, just for variety) so we have a small mouse breeding colony in the garage. Sunday morning I went out there and looked in on a pregnant breeder.

To my shock, I discovered a beautiful little yearling Oketee corn curled up in the shavings (and a dead mouse which had apparently been half ingested and then rejected when the snake realized it was too big to get into its mouth.)

I couldn't imagine where this snake had come from and had to run back into the house to ensure our little yearling Oketee hadn't escaped and found his way out there. No, this was a new addition, and we have no clue how it found its way into our garage, and then trapped itself in the mouse breeding tub.

We live in a residential tract home in Southern California, and corns are not common in this area. We also know all of our neighbors, and as a far as we know we are the only ones with reptiles in the neighborhood.

BIZARRE.........But Welcome to the Zoo!!!

That is so cool! I wish that would happen for me, Im almost embarassed to say what we pay for corn snakes here so a free one would make my day! When I hear of people only paying 20 or 30 $'s for a corn Im shocked! I wish!
Good luck with the new addition!

I had lost her about a month ago and....ah..just kidding....but it is a small world and it would be quite interesting if someone on this forum came forward from your area saying that it was their pet.lol
till that rare event, enjoy your new addition and post pics soon.

I am amazed at your story and have read it three times and out loud once to my hubby! LOL You're right about Southern California... corns are not a regular sight out here! Where in So. Cali. do you live? I am in Cypress.

We're in Mission Viejo. This is a beautiful snake. More vibrant colors and thick black borders than our other Oketee.

I'll try to get some pics up.

Well, your right Corn snakes are not common in S CA because they are not native. Some one lost their pet snake or enough of them have escaped in your area to start their own breeding colony, but I would guess that it is a pet that has gotten loose some where. Congrates on your new addition, I’m still hoping for an Albino boa to crawl into my garage LOL

My first amel corn came to me in exactly the same manner! I found her in my mice one morning, full of mouse. I figured she owed me, so immidiately bred her to my snow male. (to top that off she produced amels and snows from this breeding) I had never had an amel before this, so it wasn't one of mine. Funny thing is, a year later my son found another, a male this time, in a tree about a block away.

Oddly enough the only successful excapes I have ever had were the first two amels that I owned. Hopefully you found mine...lol. Better that then my snake hater neighbor who would have FREAKED.
