Need advice on lighting

Jo_OscarsMom Jun 14, 2004 12:25 PM

My dragon's cage is 48x18x18. I have a screen on top on which I set a 150 watt repti-sun bulb that's contained in a black metal globe.

Recently, he stopped eating and is very lethargic. He mostly sleeps under his rock or beside his basking rock.....Could it be that the light is too hot? It's a 150 watt bult.

Also, what type of bulb do you recommend? Please be specific as to brand, wattage, etc.

Thanks,
Jo

The only way to know if your bulb is too hot is to get a thermometer and check the temp. You need to get a UVB bulb, that bulb only produces UVA. The reptisun bulb is a flourescent tube, not an incandescent bulb, and that is what you need.

Jo,

Frankly there is no way to tell if your temps are too hot unless you have a way of measuring them. On top of that your environment is going to be different than mine or anyone elses on this board. If you don't have a digital thermometer get one of those first thing. After that you can read your own temps and make the necessary adjustments.

Good luck.

You also said it's in a black dome? is this just the basking light or his UVB bulb? IN either case, I would get rid of the black dome. It's either blocking out most of the light intensity of the bulb (hence it seems overcast to your dragon) or blocking all the UVB rays, if it is a uvb bulb.

which happens to be black on the outside and white on the inside. i sue them for my mvb and halogen spots because they are porcelain rated to 250W. but i do agree about the need for clarification on the uvb
