Dwarf Caiman Questions

palpman Jun 14, 2004 02:28 PM

Hi, I have got a juv. dwarf caiman who is about 15" now.
I would like to get another one and was wondering if I would
be able to keep them in the same enclosure. Would that be a good idea? I have got a 150 gallon rubbermaid container set up
with a pond and light fixture and there is plenty of room.
I am still not sure if I would like to get another palp or
possibly a smooth front or diamond caiman. Would they be alright with each other? What other kind of caimans could he live with???

Thanks for the help.

In the wild, dwarf caimans are pretty much solitary, territorial animals, unlike the spectacled caimans (which is presumably what the "diamond" caiman would be like). I keep them separated and would recommend you do too. I think if you keep them together, even if they don't fight, there will be an additional, unnatural stress (that is in additon to the stresses of captivity).

No need to keep two together. In the wild they are either found singly or in pairs and away from any other species of caiman such as specs and smoothfronts. Keep two together in a slightly small area, etc could cause aggression in the two in the form of chasing arouund the exhibits resulting in injuries to the snout, legs, etc.

I have 2 dwarfs together and they show no signs of aggression towards each other. If aggression seems to take place between the 2 (seperate them immediatly)
