Spraying back of viv...how do I make it safe (non-toxic)?

geckoman_nl Jun 14, 2004 03:40 PM

Hello,
I am building some wooden vivariums where I am using white plywood backing for it as it is cheaper and lighter than the melamime. I am planing on spraying it with some fleckstone spray paint....what do I need to do to make sure it is non-toxic?
And what do I do to make it so the heat doesnt make any toxic things?

Sorry I do not speak very english well.

Ok its now been a few days, not a single reply. This site is supposed to be one of the busiest reptile sites on the net. Yet there is like 1 new topic per day??? Damn this blows.

Sort of depends on what you ask, when you ask it and who is looking at the posts. Sometimes helpful, sometimes not, but it is free.

Is that a type of paint or a brand name, I am unfamiliar with it.

For the most part you are not going to be heating up the cage so drastically that I would expect a finish of any sort to bake out.

I use semi gloss latex paint on the interior of my cages. It comes in any color, is cheap and easy to apply. Exterior surfaces and all surfaces (including the interior one) of front fascades are stained and finished with marine varnish. I use varnish because I like the look and dislike the plastic appearance of urethanes. It takes about a week for the finishes to fully cure and lose the smell, after that they are ready for animals. Built and used cages like this for years w/o any problem.

Nobody wants to take on the task of telling you what safe for the reptile. Please show respect for those who dont feel comfortable giving advice that may affect the life of your reptiles. Besides, you should be asking the vivarium setup forum not the specific gecko forum. We are not carpenters here and dont know the exact chemical composition of all the 10000000 brands of finish out there. Can the attitude and maybe you will get along with people here.
