Gopher tortoise update!

cwilder Jun 14, 2004 03:50 PM

for those who are interested!! Thanks for the input, I contaced a local rehab group in central Florida and they now have the little guy/girl. They have a vet that will treat him and release him back to the wild when he's fine. I explained the exact location he came from so as they would place him in his home range. I only had him for a few days and he seemed to be fine. I know some of you'll suggested releasing him but I felt that wasn't the best thing to do! again, I'm no expert on wc injured torts so I just wanted to afford him the best chance. It's not as commmon to find gophers in Florida as it used to be. Hopefully with some TLC he will be back where he should be soon.

I am glad you had a succesful expereince.

Again I don't know if you read my post before but that is the job of a WILDLIFE rehabber. is to make wild animals well to be released back into the wild. I was actually getting quite upset that so many people were telling you to just let it go and let nature run its course b/c that is just so wrong. If that is supposed to happen then why are there rehabbers and nature centers etc.

Well again I am happy to hear that things went well, thank you for keeping us informed.

Chris, I don't seem to recall anyone suggesting to release it back to the wild as is. The points made were that it would most likely have survived had it been left alone to fend for itself. After all... survival of the fittest and all that.
It is commendable the steps that were taken and they were far from 'wrong'.
(this is just a thought)

survival of the fittest would have nothing to do with an animal that receives a dog bite. That is NOT part of nature. Dogs are NOT native to these areas. If say it had been bitten by a raccoon or dropped by a hawk or something and survived that would be survival.

Sorry, I have to chime in. Dogs are not native to the range of the gopher tortoise, but red wolves are. And since wolves like to dig, I imagine they used to encounter tortoises in the days before they were exterminated.
