question on eggs and males

chipstahoy Jun 14, 2004 04:32 PM

so...i had 3 leos together in a 10 gallon, and today i found 2 eggs in the humid hide, but i thought all three were females. i can't tell with the hemipenal bulges and the v pores and stuff...so i put them all with my male, and he's goin nuts biting them and stuff (trying to mate...?) but one of my "females" started wagging her tail...and i thought only males did that when they greeted or something? but they're leaving each other alone right now. do you think that one of my "females" is really a male? do females sometimes lay eggs that aren't fertilized? thanks

females do the tail wagg just as much as males do, in mating, and feeding. females can also lay eggs if there infertile, im not sure if this can be done with out mating thou. if you male is biting them, i would suggest seporating them, just for the safety of the females.

Three animals in one ten gallon tank? That is way over crowded. Allow at least 10 gallons per animal in the minimum. As for eggs, females can lay infertile eggs without mating.

the reason they were together is cuz none of them are full grown yet...the one that laid the eggs is still pretty small, probably 3-4 inch body...the smallest one i have. i would never house 3 fully grown leos together in a 10 gallon.

How long have you had all 3 females in one tank??
I heard that female leos can hold sperm(I am not sure for how long though)
Also male leos are very rough when they mate, I always know when mine have had sex because he bites them all over especially at the neck... And if you had two males in one tank they probably wouldnt leave each other alone, I think they would fight until either one was badly injured or dead.

the eggs were white and more squishy than my other eggs from the female with the male...so are they pry infertile? thanks

They could be infertile, although I two really squishy eggs... one died and the other one is about to hatch.. I think that its because I found the eggs a bit earlier then I had found the others, and I didnt give the eggs enough time to harden... Anyways I wouldnt throw it out.. I would keep it for a while, and then you can candle it and see if you can see anything in side it.. I would wait at least a month.. I mean if its no molding and its not hurting any other eggs, there is no harm in keeping it!!!
