Safest/Best brand of heat pad for corn snake?

dumbblonde Jun 14, 2004 05:28 PM

What is the best/safest brand of heat pad in the market today? I dont want the heater to get too hot because I am planning on keeping a corn snake in the cage. Which means the cage needs to be around 75-85 degrees F.

Here are some examples:
Zoo Med
T Rex
Exo Terra
...or any other ones you know about.

Some of the more knowledgeable helped me out with this. I started with an XtoTerra and it was way too hot so i got rid of it and got the recommended $10 walmart special.

In the section with the ace bandages and knee braces they have human heat pads the temps are fine on low for me. Just make sure to get the cheaper one as it doesn't have the auto shut off the more expensive models do. My local Walmart had 2 sizes without the auto shut off, the smaller one is perfect for my glass aquarium it takes up a little less than half of the floorspace. I set two small pieces of wood (hamster chew blocks actually) to keep the aquarium from resting on the cord.

good luck

I've recently started using Ultratherm heat pads purchased from www.beanfarm.com and have been extremely pleased. I did try these without a thermostat to start with, but because I keep my home so warm anyway, the surface temperatures reached 100F (mounted on a side of the cage, not the floor). Having tried that method, in my opinion, ANY heat pad should be used in conjunction with a thermostat or at least a dimmer - regardless of brand.

I've had good experiences with both a Zoo-med and a T-Rex undertank heater. The T-Rex doesnt get as hot, but it's still too hot so either way you'll need a thermostat or a rheostat. I like thermostats; rheostats wont adjust to changing room temperature.

I guess the only real difference I saw between them was the T-Rex didnt have an adhesive, you have to find some way to attach it yourself. The zoomed has a sticky side.
