She cleaned her plate while I was at work today!!!

Lyn Jun 14, 2004 07:12 PM

I am so excited! Sunshine ate very little this weekend, only some fresh greens I hand fed her and some dandelion flowers I hand fed her. I took her outside both Sat and Sun but she didn't eat anything. I had a full plate of greens in her enclosure both days and she just walked right over it, ignoring the food. I figured she still needed some settle in time so was not too concerned. I prepared her dish this morning and thought how nice it would be to come home and find it empty, and sure enough it was!!! So she must be settling in ok to finish a whole plate of greens, don't you think? I got her out for only 1/2 hour after work then it started to thunder/lightning so we came back in. I picked her some more stuff while we were out and refilled her plate. It's a small plate. Not sure if she was still hungry or not. I know I have to be careful not to overfeed her, still trying to figure out what a good daily portion is. I know a Tortoise eating greens is not really a big deal but it's her first empty plate so I'm so excited!

I'm just curious, but do you have a cover on your enclosure? I'm wondering because you said the food was all gone--did you mean completely gone, or just little bits left? Torts are messy eaters, and always leave something, even if it just tiny pieces. I have a box turtle outside, and I thought he was cleaning his plate, too, until I realized things were just too clean. I finally caught a blue jay stealing some of the food. If you have a cover, then nothing to worry about!

I had torn the greens into bite sized pieces, there was not one single piece left on or aroung the plate. Being indoors, nothing else could have eaten it. I live near Buffalo NY so I can't keep her in an outdoor pen.

Sorry, for some reason I was thinking it was outdoors! Well, she must have been very determined to hunt down every last scrap, so that's a very good sign. Congrats!

Looks like she's picking up...depend how much UVB she's getting since she's indoor, just don't overfeed her and keep monitoring her weight and strike for an even grow rate if possible, don't forget the clean water because most torts needs water more than foods (rehydration/flushing da system!) especially wc animals from a pet store
