NEED HELP!! with Identification

panthercz Jun 14, 2004 09:03 PM

Okay I have a supposed Diego Suarez, but it was brought to my attention by Mads, that he may really be a Tamatave. I had 9 of them to start off with, 3 females and 6 males all from the same clutch. Is it possible for there to be some Tamatave genes mixed with the Diego Suarez genes, and for some of the offspring to show the Diego pattern/colors and some to show the Tamatave pattern/colors? Or would it be more of mix, and be more like a mutt? I've seen panthers that are mixed bred, i.e. Sambava/Nosy Be, but they turn out to look more like a mix, instead of half the babies looking like Sambavas and the other half Nosy Be. PLEASE HELP AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK OR KNOW.

Top pic is of the one that looks more like a Tamatave. Bottom pic is of his brother who looks like a Diego Suarez.

That's a heck of a variation in a clutch of panthers.... Did you hatch these out or did you buy them? The top looks like a definate Tamatave to me also, and the bottom looks like a Diego, possibly Sambava.... The Tamatave one is nice looking though. Where'd you get these?

You say you had 9 of them from the same clutch. Are you breeding these siblings?? I certainly hope you're not inbreeding.

They are beautiful animals....regardless of the locale or mix. Great colors.

They were bought at the Chicago reptile show, all 9 in cage labeled Diego Suarez and were suppose to all be that, according to the breeder. Unless they made a mistake and put some Tama's in there too. Or there is a mix between the two bloodline wise. They all appeared to be the same age and were all the same size.

As of a about 2 months ago all the males looked nearly identical color and pattern wise. They didn't really start showing any differences till after that. They all were mostly green with black banding, and a little red in the throats and chest.

Also they are not being inbred.

they are both great looking panthers. the first one deffinately looks like a tamatave, and an awesome one at that. i dont have enough background to back it up, but with all the white on his face and that beautiful orange color, i would have to say tamatave

I contacted the breeder and they say that it is indeed a Diego Suarez. They said they've seen real red Diego's and also real blue Diego's too. So they may be like the Ambanjas that vary a lot in color sometimes.

Either way he is a very cool looking panther, and has a great personality to match.
