Lighting Exposure

RoyC Jun 14, 2004 09:27 PM

How long do I need to keep the ReptiSun 5.0 and the ZooMed Basking light on each day? My dad is still being a punk and complains that they will raise the electric bill too much so I'm only able to turn it on when he goes to work and turn it off before he comes back (10:00 am - 7:00 pm). Is that enough?

Also, could anyone tell me how much watts the Fluval 204 uses? Thanks.

Turtles need a day/night cycle, just like humans. Most people around here run their lights between 10-12 hours. Many around here get light timers (you can find them in lighting part of the hardware area in Wal Mart--$5) so that the lights turn on and off for a set time, and you don't have to remember to do it.

As far as power consumption for your fluval filter, I'm not sure. I have the 404 model and I didn't see any mention of power usage. If you contact the Hagen company that makes the Fluval filters, they might be able to tell you. Check their website for contact info: www.hagen.com

Hope this all helps!

Well Roy -- I hate to sound like an "OLD FART" but all winter running my setups cost me an average of $500 a month in electricity so I can relate to what your Dad is saying. BUT ... I live on Long Island and we have the highest rates in the country and you only have one set up. So you can lay that fact on him and see if works.

10-7 is fine. That's plenty of basking time etc. You could also spring for a mercury vapor bulb and a ceramic light fixture to hold it. That would give you the necessary UVB and the heat for basking all in one. (though the flourescent should not draw that much). Anyway if 10-7 keeps the peace in the household Dude just leave it be. the turtle will be fine with that.
