Cage Questions

Zym Jun 14, 2004 09:48 PM

Okie What kind of wood should I use? I want something that is hardy, looks very nice, but also not too expensive. Also, I know some wood looks very nice stained, and shlacked(sp).. would this be any harm to my monitor?

I plan on doing a custom cage in these dimensions, 6' long X 4' deep X 3' high.. is this too big for a savannah monitor that's currently like 7-9inches? I plan on having the top all screen, BUT, this will only be for the lights to be placed on, and around the whole top of the screening, and lights, will be a large wooden box with just enough holes in it for the wires to the lights to peak out of, in order for them to plug in. Should I also place small screen holes on the sides for fresh air to get into him?

Also, Types of heating.. Currently, in his cage i have a 100w ceramic emitter, and a 50w light. but this is a 20long gallon tank soo... I'm wondering what i would probably need to make the temperatures correct.

Substrate - Currently, I'm using peat moss. I like it, but I don't like it. I'm looking for something more compactable, that he can burrow in, make a nest perhaps that won't collapse. Something that also holds moisture well.

Any suggestions would be great. Also, Feel free to email me at endigohaze@yahoo.com with pictures, ideas, suggestions.

hi there,
marine plywood(1/2in thick) will be fine. on my opinion, dont use an all screen top for the lights, maybe u can just drill holes on the top for the wirings and placed the lamp inside(high enough so the monitor wont reach it and burn itself) on the side, maybe u can cut a rectangular hole and use a screen but be sure to reinforced it, but not the whole side(you'll loose humidity)... as for the substrate, it depends on what are available in ur area, but i prefer a sand/topsoil mix...

that's just my idea, that suits monitors here in the philippines coz i'm in a tropical country... maybe other guys here will tell you their ideal setup...
