I can't get rid of the mice smell

kylescott Jun 15, 2004 04:58 AM

I need some help

I recently bought a large terrarium for housing a ball python. I am getting the cage ready for the snake and I can't seem to get rid of the smell of rodents (the former owner used the cage for mice). I have used bleach, vinegar, baking soda and oxi clean but nothing seems to work. If anyone knows of a tough cleanser that will get rid of the horrible smell please tell me. Also, if I use this tank that smells like mice is there a chance that the ball python will try to take a bite out of me (confusing my hand with food). I know that ball pythons are very docile and tame snakes, but I don't know how one would act in cage that smell like mice. Thanks.

I had skimmed the thread below and all I can think is too soak it in bleach 5% overnight and drain it and rinse it and then sun dry it thoroughly. The last resort...I don't like that it takes more work to rinse it....is Odo Ban. Cleaner from Sam's. Rinse THOROUGHLY.
Personally I am amazed the previous stuff hasn't worked for you. I would be surprised if the smell bothered your snake though. Chances are much better that all the soaps will be more of a bother to it. My snakes live mere feet from the feeder rodents and are just fine.

It may be in the wood, and in that case there may not be a way to get the smell out.
