Question regarding Surinam BCC

roubear Jun 15, 2004 11:46 AM

Hello, I'm new to the forum but have been a Kingsnake.com fan for years. Throughout this time i've done quite a bit of research regarding different types of herps and have one question that I can't get a clear answer on. Is there a REAL difference between a captive bred BCC (like a Surinam) and a captive bred BCI as far as temperment goes? I'm aware of the obvious physiological differences...but it seems like some people say they can be just as sweet as BCI and some say they are rather testy and aggressive.

My goal for the Surinam that I will soon be purchasing is for Pet, possible breeding later on, and educational purposes (next year I'll be guest teaching a pre-vet class with a professor to maybe spark some new reptile vets!) Mostly it will be my pet though...any advice on reputable breeders, advice on the species, and anyone who is actually selling some BABIES or YOUNG captive bred can contact me at roubear33@yahoo.com
I realize that balls are most calm and all that...I"ve done my research haha, but I've just absolutely fallen in love with the coloration on these Surinams. I'd love a retic too but...not enough experience and not enough space!!!

I appreciate it.

Tame Surinames are out there but it is a fact of nature that many are not tame and never will be.

What we call tame or mean is simply how the animal responds to the novel situations it is subjected to in captivity and genetics are a factor. Also remember that even a tame boa of any variety can and will bite under some circumstance as yet unknown or planned for.

You will be rolling the dice buying a baby and seeing how it turns out, regardless of how calm the parents apppear to be.. find an adult or juvenile Suriname that is healthy and is perfectly calm when you handle it. That may cost more but is your best bet.

I agree with what Gus said, and he also sell very healthy BCC boas.
So you may want to e-mail him and see what he has available.

Take care,
Tom
