Scarlet Snake

cwteseneer Jun 15, 2004 12:03 PM

I just caught a nice 15" Scarlet Snake. I was woundering if any one had any experience with this snake. I know they eat small reptile eggs, lizards, and other snakes. Will they except a pinky mouse? Any help with this species is welcome.

Thanks

Good luck. If it is a scarlet snake, you are in for more than you bargained for. I was able to keep mine alive for awhile off whole eggs that you buy from a grocery store. It did good for about 4 months then she ate the substrate in her cage and died. After that I decided that a snake like that was more advanced than I was ready to deal with. My advice is if you are not really experienced in snakes to let it go.

That was good advice above. Scarlets are definitly not for the beginner. I have successfully kept them on a diet of small skinks and Dekay brown snakes but that was about it. I have heard people say they fed theirs pinks but I have yet to have actually seen one do that. They are not designed for rodent prey (low jaw capacity).
