swollen tail.....amputation?

wsmitty Jun 15, 2004 02:05 PM

As a hatchling one of my babies damaged its tail by striking it against its enclosure (we scared it). The tail did not have external breakage, but you could tell it was damaged internally. Three weeks have passed and this is what it looks like. There seems to be circulation going to the very tip, but it still worries me. Does anyone recommend amputation?

Snipping the tip of the tail would be what I would do. The looks like hurts. If it is just a blood clott and it hasn't gone by now, then I would cut it. It should grow back in less then 2 weeks.

I heard once of a breeder cutting off kinked tails so the leo looks normal with a lost tail tip and not bad genes.
Don't do what I say though, go see a vet that realy knows whats going on.

I don't know anything about snipping their tails, but wouldn't that hurt them if you snipped their tail?

does the gecko feel it? other than looks and infections and secondary problems as such, are there any other negative affects?

Well for one you need to take your leo to a vet. That is an infection; the swollen look its pus that has colleted into that bulging spot. Unfortunately it wont go away on its own, unlike us when reptiles get an infection it clots and it will stay there, if you don’t take your leo to the vet it will get bigger and it might drop the tail or it will die from the infection. Ive actually seen this before and its pretty nasty, luckly your leo has it on its tail. The vet might be able to get the infection out without having to cut off the tail, if they can your going to see a nasty yellow-white blob. Good luck with your leo and I hope it will be ok

Dont amputate ! Leo can drop their tail, but when they do so, some mechanism inside them is ready for that. Blood vessel are constricted and bone joint separate in special place, if you amputate, the gecko isnt ready for that. It will be very traumatic and you leo can die from the loss of blood or infection. I can guess that he will be VERY mad at you.
Take it to a vet is the best thing. Just my 2 cents.
