Bonita update... NEED ADVICE!

lauraLSU Jun 15, 2004 03:51 PM

I spoke to the vet tech this morning for the last update, but the vet called me this afternoon. Bad news, Bonita is not responding to the strong antibiotics (Baytril) so the vet wants to change her to two different stronger antibiotics. Also, the abcess seems to be deeper than initially thought. She said it may be BEHIND the eye, which would explain why the eye swelled first. The other side is showing signs of possible infection. She (the vet) is going to open the abcess more and explore its depth. With the new antibiotics her prognosis is fair to good. The new treatment through Fri bumps my total to over $200. The vet was very understanding and when I told her of my plans after school and said she would help me any way she could (A little professional comraderie never hurt!)

She outlined the potential treatment scenarios, some resulting in considerable cost. The decision about treatment is further compounded with the knowledge that she has not lost any weight while there, she is eating well on her own, and seems to be her usual witchy self (She bit the vet during her antibiotic injection over the weekend! Yay)

My question to everyone here is Where do I draw the line? As much as I love my only girl, I can't afford expensive treatment. As attached as I am, she IS only a lizard. A horrible thing to say, but I have had to make limits on veterinary care for my horse and dogs before. IT is hard but unfortunately necessary.
If anyone has any insights on this situation, I would really appreciate it. I have until Thursday or Friday I think, before I have to make another decision.

I personally can't answer that one. Maybe she will just let ya slide ! Hopefully, she will do what she can, and understand you don't have unlimited funds right now.

Don't even know what to say, as I have no idea what causes the infection behind her eyes, thats a shame.

But you had said she was having some small eye infections here and there lately. I guess it just spread and progressed.

I feel really bad for you and your deleima. Thing is the stronger the antibiotic they use on her, the more chance it may hurt her.

They kick their butts and they become very dehydrated while on those strong meds. And sometimes, atleast with bearded dragons, it makes them LOSE their appetite.

I suppose you will just have to see how things go.

And trust your gut feeling when faced with having to have an answer. ( I know that did not help any) sorry!

Hope it will turn out well, Laura, maybe she will perk up !
Sure hope so! Let us know!

Sorry to hear about your trouble, its seems like you might just have to wait to see what happens. Definitly a tough decision.
I know I have worked out payment plans with vets before possibly you might be able to work something like that out.
Hope things go O.K.
