Overweight Burms.

diseasedstran Jun 15, 2004 10:48 PM

I have 2 Male Burms that seem to be a bit over weight one 13' 80lbs And one 11' 68lbs When they curl up they have rolls apon rolls on them where they bend. If they were chins they'd have about 4 of'm.

So I started cuting back thier food a bit. Most of my males (I have 4) Stop eating from around November to march. So instaid of feeding them in march I wated to feed them till april. They each got one 8 pound rabbit. That's all they have had to eat since november. I weighed them today and they weigh about the same as they did back in september. The two males in question get taken outside to roam the front yard for 30 minutes every other day. They each have a 3'x 4' x 8' Cage with climbing areas about half way up that they seem to use every so often. I was wondering how long I might have to keep them on this diet to see some weight changes with thier current excersize and feeding regimin.

Thank you.

My male is 13 ft. and 90-95 lbs and is far from fat. Your snakes sound like they are just about right to me. Burms are a heavy bodied python and will have rolls when they are coiled. I have seen a really fat burm before and it was outrageous. he was about 11ft. and somewhere in the neiborhood of 150lbs. Now that is a fat burm. At llft. and 80 lbs he/she should be fine. The only time you really need to worry about it is when they stop growing longer like my 12 year old albino male. I have him on a strict schedule and rabbit size that I know will keep him healthy all year long. He does put on some weight in the summer months, but that is normal and it is what keeps him healthy during the winter when he doesn't want to eat as often. Burms should eat 10% of their body weight every 10-14 days in order to have the calories they need to burn. I hope this helps.
