eggs finally hatched but...

purelake Jun 19, 2003 01:43 PM

Out of 16 only 9 ended up hatching somewhere around the 90 day mark. I don't actually get to house the eggs when they are incubating, my partner does. I have been having issues with him not incubating properly and I am wondering if you have any suggestions?

Why would 7 of the eggs fail? And what would cause them to be so small and poorly colored? These were the eggs of my best female and best male, I was expecting some really nice babies. I am worried because he has 3 or 4 other batches of eggs right now and don't want to lose anymore.
Thanks

i don't really know much about your dragons, but here are some possibilities off the top of my head...

how old is your female? if they are bred too early, the quality of their eggs will not be optimal. i have read that the best age for breeding is between 2-4 years, although if you check the dachiu website, they have success with females only 10 months old.

what about nutrition? were you providing enough vitamins and minerals to your female prior to mating? and did you continue to supply her with enough throughout her gravid period?

regarding incubation, you might want to read katherine tosney's web site for some detailed information pertaining to temperature, methods of incubation etc. it's also very important to orient your eggs properly and make sure they're not moved around and to keep proper humidity levels.

lastly, i think some dragons just lay bad/infertile eggs!

good luck,

yourself. If you are having issues w/his incubating techniques, why not alternate who incubates them (he gets one clutch, you get the next, he gets the 3rd, you get the 4th, etc, etc). Get your own incubator and see who has the healthiest hatchlings? I understand your "partner" wants to included, but wouldn't you both profit from having the healthiest babies? It might also tell you if it's his incubating that is making them "small and poorly colored" or if it has something to do with the dragons.

Just a thought to throw in w/the others.
