When i went to my local petshop yesterday, i saw the most amazing thing. Maybe a new species??? When i asked the seller about the snakes details, i was flabergasted. It was a Boa, but from SE Asia??? From the books i read, boa's come from south America, SE Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa (Sand boas, constrictors, etc). The animal originated from Irian Jaya. The adult size was around 70 cm, grows to be as thick as an average persons thumb, it was arboreal, dark brown in colour with dark/ almost black blotches, with some specimens having bright brown blotches. The seller said that the boa ate small geckos because of it's small size, yet i believe it may be coaxed to take pinkies and other foodstuff.
Eventhough it was wild caught (most likely), when i held the animal, it was extremely docile and didn't show signs of agresion at all ( this was true for i got to handle 2 of the specimens). and the seller was able to sell a few young/ subadult specimens together with no problem whatsoever (agresion towards cagemates) in a plastic pethome. It will even rest in clumps together. Plus, it was quite shy and not overly active.
I confirmed that it was indeed from the boid family, because it gave life birth, and tried to constrict my fingers. To bad my mom wont let me keep snakes, because i'd love to keep a pair, and i believe that it will make an excelent pet indeed. It was quite cheap to for a snake. One snake would cost me Rp 100.000,- (Thats around 10 bucks in US dollars!!!). It would fit in one of those plastic pet homes (for hatchlings, and subadults), and adults would probably be content a small aquarium/ tuperware (10 gallons at least for one specimen). It's habits seem to be nocturnal, when the geckos come out and play.
Any ideas on the snakes identity???
Sorry, no pics
