dagangsta Jun 16, 2004 12:03 PM

ok, yea, this is really retarded, recently i've been reading up on roaches, and i figured it would really be a good idea for me to start using them so today when ig ot home from school, i took a sterelite container used my soldering gun and made ventilation screens onthe sides and top, but yea anyway my mom gets home, and i told her that for my birthday i wanted the m to order me some roaches, and she was like no, no roaches in the house. i told her how they wouldnt get loose, theyaren't loud, they breed easily and all, ahd how much better than crix they are but she still said no, nvr really gave me an answer, yea, this post is mainly venting, but i'm also wondering, does anyone have any ideas for how i can convince her to let me??

but if you were my kid I wouldn't let you either. I know roaches have their advantages but I grew up where there were more roaches than air. Just say no to roaches!

I have been raising roaches for seveal years now and I can tell you that no matter what you try with hissers, you are bound to get a few escapes. I's not a problem but it WILL happen.

Sooo... try Deatheads or oranges.they dont climb and are real easy to raise. The nice thing is they don't climb, fly, make noise or smell. one advantage to raising your own food is no emergancy trips to the pet store cause you ran out of crix. It is educational as well. When you have a large enough colony they can be interesting to feed too.

what do you keep your roach colonies in? Do they eat their babies or can you raise all sizes in the same container?

I keep them in rubbermaid tubs. a 50 gal tub houses several hundred adults and babies. I change the substrate every 3 months. As long as they are fed well, all sizes can be housed together.

You can start out in a 20 gallon tub and for your collection, probably never outgrow it. You can also breed roaches as a business as breeder colonies can go for $1.00 a roach. some roaches sell for up to $10 each.

There are many interesting species of roaches so be carefull you dont get hooked. here's a real cool one

silkworms are pretty easy to keep, they don't escape (well had a few crawl out of their container but was able to find them easily enough). The only real work in breeding htem is picking up the male moth and putting him next to a female cause they can't fly and tend to just wonder around aimless flapping their wings. The next duty is to wait several months with the eggs in a fridge before you can take them out to hatch.

Food is the only thing that is very limited, either feed them mulberry leaves or silkworm chow.

i have the same problem, all moms seem to be scared of roaches.
