How often is normal for a Cal king to defecate?

MountainLyon Jun 16, 2004 03:51 PM

Mine goes more often than I expected, about every couple days although some may have been triggered by musking. Often it's a mix of clear urine and white solids (digested bone, right?) I know I should have a vet check it out as was recommended since it's wild caught, I just don't see that happening in the next few days at least. The vent looks good. The snake seems really healthy, plenty tongue flicks and curious cruising when handled, mouth looks clean and pink (saw when it yawned), it just shed with no problem, and it's feeding eagerly. Anything to worry about?

Also, my UTH quit working Yesterday, good thing we're having hot weather right now. I know it was working the day before because the snake was on it. I noticed it quit when I went to measure it's temp. I think it was too hot anyway, definately too big, I had a thick newspaper and a square piece of plexi covering the hot spot in the middle. I'll probably get the mini size stick on I saw at Petco, called "cobra mat" or something like that. Is there a minimum pad size for a three footer? It likes to curl up in it's granola bar box so I figure it only need a heater about that size.

Well it really depends how often you are feeding it and how much you are feeding it per sitting. My Cali King will eat 2 hoppers or 3-4 fuzzies per feeding which is once every 7 days. I feed my snakes every Saturday and by Tues/Wed the snake will 'go' and will 'go' a few times after that.

So I say mine goes maybe two or three times in a 7 day span. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would be more worried if the snake didn't go at all!!

I also feed once a week, but I feed it one small live adult mouse, the smallest Petco has live. No problem with them, eating quickly and hunting for more. I bet it was eating bigger mice in the wild but I know better than to try.

Thanks for the quick response.

Mine generally have defecated as often as they feed, usually within 2 days after the meal.

Musking changes everything, but mine have always stopped musking very early.

If you see a pattern of frequent (more than 3-4 times weekly) dropping, see a veterinarian.

I feed mine once a week. They defecate the 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th day after eating. They never musk. Big change from a ball python!
