people will do anything to sell a product.

Its not an iguana or even a reptile but takes considerably more care. Some people should have their heads examined.

Yeah its completely legal unless the person entering the contest is under 18.. then the parent's have a say in it. Otherwise... nope.. and it looks like the contest has been going on for a while... I do hope where the horses come from isn't a rescue...because undoubtably the horses are just going from bad to worse care.

this horse contest is completely different from anything having to do with reptile abuse. That mare is in excellent condition and has been well cared for. Most of the people going to that web site in the first place already have farms with barns and fenced in pastures and other horses. Unlike being at a carnival with a lizard for a handout, the, "winner," can't have the horse if they can't take care of it!
I have entered the contest myself in the past when I saw a horse I was interested in owning, as have several of my friends! It would be very cool to win a horse worth a couple thousand dollors!
I own, train, and trail ride horses, and I have for most of my life. I think I represent the majority of the people who enter such a contest. Of course there will be freaks, but I gurantee you they won't touch that horse!
I realize that you guys are not horse people and are not familiar with the horse community, but I am. And I am offened by the comments here.

I'm a horse person too, and I agree, this is completely different!

First off, I apologize for offending you. No offense was intended, we're just animal lovers concerned about the welfare of a fellow creature.

In my experience, animal giveaways are a bad idea for the same reason that "Free Puppies" is -- if the individual can't afford to pay for the animal, how can you guarantee that they can pay for its care? I understand that I'm not a "horse person," but horse abuse & neglect is just as common as housepet abuse & neglect.

Since you're familiar with this contest, maybe you can help us out by explaining how the company ensures that the winner has a good & capable home waiting for it. I'd love to be better informed on this issue.

Thanks,
atomic

I read through the rules for the contest, and the only thing I see about the suitability of winners is that "Winners must execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility". But it doesn't say what this is, or where to find more about it. Is this like a license to own a horse?

I did read that the horses come from a breeder, not a rescue, I remember someone asked that.

So what's the deal? I don't know any reason to think "horse people" are just naturally more conscientious than "reptile people"...

Unfortunately our modern society is a throw-away society. No species of animal is invulnerable to being tossed aside. Personally, I don't agree with giving ANY animal as a contest prize. I think it perpetuates the throw-away mindset. But, that's just my opinion. Opinions are like _______, everybody has one.

Before you can even enter the contest you have to fill out a bunch of information about yourself. Then if you happen to be chosen the horse isn't simply dropped off in your back yard. There are three further steps after you have been chosen as the winner which have to be completed within five days.
Assuming you pass all of the steps the horse will be shipped to a location within 500 miles of where you live. At that point you are responsible for taking your own horse trailer (which by the way, the oldest, cheapest, most broke down horse trailer you'll ever find is still $1500) and driving your V8 gas guzzler 500 miles each way to pick up the horse within 30 days. Oh, and since it would probably be stressful for the horse to get back to your place in the middle of the night it would be best if you stayed over night at a hotel and pick the horse up early in morning to head back home.
Also, the horses come from professional breeders and trainers, not rescues.
And I may not be able to afford to buy a Lamborghini or Ferrari, but if someone gave one to me, the insurance and gas would be a small price to pay to drive it . . .
