Ghost Shrimp

RoyC Jun 16, 2004 05:03 PM

Would it be good to throw in a bunch of ghost shrimps and have them breed around the tank? I put 4 in a few days ago but now i only see 3. I'm guessing the turtle ate one of them but i watched him try to catch other ones and he couldn't. There are a lot of places for them to hide but i still want my turtle to catch them and control the population.

I bought half a dozen ghost shrimp last summer and had them for many months, the turtles never ate them, but I never noticed any breeding either. I had to move and I had to completely drain the tank, and after they were put back in I never saw them again. I guess the turtles finally got them.

I tried unsuccessfully to breed ghost shrimp, they're always carrying eggs. From what I;ve read is that you would need a large pond (thousands of gallons) with lots of dark crevices for them to breed and survive

I let my cousin take care of the two females that had eggs already inside of them. One seems to be dead from what he's telling me but the other one is alive and healthy i guess. As soon as they hatch i'll be getting the females back. I'll just dump them in there and see what happens.

Nothing wrong with putting a few ghost shrimp in. I put a handful in a few months back and now they are all gone. I had thought they were all gone when I did a tank drain, but found 1 floundering (OOPS!!) when the water was almost gone. It died soon afterwards.
